10. Approaching Catalina Island Airport (3 of 3)

Turning final for runway 22. The arrow points to the far end of the runway. The dark area in the lower right is the Pacific Ocean. This is a really lousy picture. I tried to make the runway stand out by enhancing the contrast, but this was the best I could do.

I really wanted to get a picture closer in, but I ran out of film! Needless to say, I don't have any pictures of the return trip.

Most runways have "clear zones" at the ends so you can land a little short without breaking the airplane. As you can see from these pictures, there's no such thing as "a little short" on this runway; you'll splatter yourself on the rock face. (It's kind of like landing on an aircraft carrier that isn't moving.)
